    About Kouna

    Kouna (water reed), botanical name, Schoenoplectus lacustris (Linn) Palla) is a fibrous stem grass native to Manipur, India. It is a subtropical natural grass with a soft stem and rhizomes.They are extensively cultivated in low-lying wetland areas of valleys in Manipur, particularly Khangabok, also known as the hub of Kouna Handicrafts in Manipur. Rich in cultural and ecological significance, Kouna is deeply intertwined with the tradition of Manipur. It is culturally associated with the mythical holy snake, god ‘Nongda Lairen Pakhangba’ of the Meiteis. Traditionally, they have been used to make mats not just for seating purposes but also for rituals and other customary practices.

    Kouna is a 100% biodegradable, non-toxic, flexible and lightweight material with natural air-conditioning properties. They are naturally resistant to insects and their stems shine with a natural luster when matured. They also contribute to environmental conservation by removing harmful microorganisms and toxic metals from water while providing habitats for birds and fish, creating a sanctuary for wildlife. This versatile plant requires minimal investment and labor, thriving in low-lying marshy areas. A single planting can yield harvests for 30–35 years, with up to three harvests annually, ensuring consistent production. They are mostly grown as a source of livelihood with minimal investment and labor.

Additionally, disfigured or compressed items can be easily restored, making packing and transportation hassle-free. They are also easily washable without being affected.
